Participating merchants will also allow you to get additional cash back from the transaction, if you choose. Cash can also be obtained at an ATM with the Visa, NYCE or PLUS® logos (appropriate ATM fees may apply, please see the program Terms & Conditions or Account Guide for more information on fees. Can a TD Go Card be used to make a purchase that is larger than the balance on the card?

No. The TD Go Cardholder cannot make purchases for amounts larger than the amount of money on their card. Occasionally a merchant will allow a purchase before checking the amount of money on the card. When they do this it might result in the card having a negative balance. This is not very common, but if it does happen, TD Bank will automatically reduce the difference from the next deposit made to the TD Go Card. An overdraft fee will not be charged. By keeping track of the available balance, this can be easily avoided.

How can I view where the card was used?

Does the TD Go Card expire?

Available funds on the card do not expire. However, there is a "Good Thru" date printed on the front of the card. This date is needed by merchants in order to process a transaction. TD Bank will mail a new card to the address we have on file before the card passes the "Good Thru" date. After 12 consecutive months of inactivity an inactivity fee of $2.50 per month will be assessed against the balance in the TD Go Card Account each month the card is inactive. Cardholders can avoid being charged the inactivity fee by regularly making purchases or loading funds to the card.

What if I have questions regarding the card account?

Account information may be obtained via the TD Go Card website. For your convenience, automated account information, dedicated Customer Service Representatives and the website are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Can someone else besides the Cardholder use the TD Go Card?

Absolutely not. Your Cardholder should keep the card and the card number under control at all times. They should not tell anyone their PIN, and should not write it on the card.

Will my Cardholder get a paper statement?

Your Cardholder will not receive a paper statement in the mail. All TD Go Card transactions are available online. If you would like a written history of account transactions, call Customer Service at 1-855-219-8050. A fee may apply; please see the Terms & Conditions or Account Guide for more information on fees.

Can the TD Go Card be used at a gas station?

If the card is used at a gas station, we recommend paying inside and specifying the exact amount. Some terminals automatically preauthorize transactions at the pump for a predetermined amount or put a hold on the available funds, prior to the purchase, that may exceed the balance on the card and cause the card to be declined.

Do some merchants place a hold on available value on the TD Go card in excess of the actual purchase amount?

Yes, some merchants may seek approval for an amount greater than the purchase amount. In that case, TD Bank will place a hold on the card balance for the amount approved. That hold will stay in place until the merchant sends TD Bank the final amount of the purchase, which may be several days or longer. Here are some examples of when this could occur:

  • Restaurants and service-oriented places - It is customary for service-oriented merchants to automatically add 20% to the amount of the bill when authorizing the purchase. So remember to make sure that the balance on the card is enough to cover the total bill (including the tip) or the purchase may be declined.
  • Gas stations (pay at the pump) - Gas stations sometimes program the electronic terminal at the pump to seek approval for a set amount that could be in excess of the actual purchase amount. Avoid any service issue by simply pre-paying for the gas (for an exact amount) with an attendant inside the station.

How can I close the TD Go Card?

If you have decided to close the TD Go Card, please call Customer Service at 1-855-219-8050. Customer Service will assist you in closing the card and will reverse any remaining funds in the account to the primary funding account. Funds will be reversed after the account has been closed for 30 days. Expand  Using the TD Go Card

Where can I use my TD Go Card?

You can use your TD Go Card anywhere that accepts Visa or NYCE. NYCE is the network TD Bank uses to process some of the PIN transactions made with the TD Go Card. Your PIN is a four digit code you use to make certain purchases or withdraw cash at an ATM. More to come on that in the "How do I set a Personal Identification Number (PIN)" question later.

What if I want to get cash from my TD Go Card Account?

Unless your Account Owner has turned off cash access, you will be allowed to withdraw cash at ATMs and to get cash back at participating retailers (many grocery stores, pharmacies and national retailers allow this). You can use any TD Bank ATM in the U.S. and Canada. If you use a TD Bank ATM you will not be charged any fees; however if you use an ATM that is not a TD Bank ATM we will charge you a $3 fee and the bank whose ATM you are using will likely charge you fees as well (this is called a surcharge). Please refer to the Terms & Conditions or Account Guide for more information on the fees TD Bank will charge you. To withdraw cash or view your balance at an ATM, choose the "Checking" option as the account type.

Please Note: ATM owners/operators may charge their own fees for ATM transactions and balance inquiries. The amount you can withdraw depends on the available funds in the card account, but you can't take out more than $60 per week. Be sure to know your PIN when withdrawing cash at the ATM.

How do I use my TD Go Card?

There are two ways to use your TD Go Card: You can sign for your purchases, or you can enter your PIN. Many times the terminal where you swipe your card will automatically prompt you to enter your PIN. If this happens, you can still choose to sign your receipt instead of entering a PIN. You simply need to tell the clerk you want to sign for your purchase and you don't want to use your PIN. Each merchant has their own process to override the PIN to ensure you can sign for your purchase. In some instances, you can self-select to sign for your purchases by selecting Credit instead of Debit on the terminal before you swipe the card. When you select Credit, the transaction will still only remove the amount of your purchase from your TD Go Account - it is not related to credit like a credit card. You can also get cash at an ATM with the Visa, NYCE or PLUS logos (ATM fees may apply, please see the program Terms & Conditions or Account Guide for more information on fees. Avoid any ATM fees that can be charged by another bank by using a TD Bank ATM). Always remember that to withdraw cash or check your balance at an ATM you must choose the "Checking" option as the account type.

It is important to note that the amount that is actually taken off your card may be different than what you paid depending on the exchange rate. In addition we will charge a 3% fee for the exchange processing. Please see the Terms & Conditions or Account Guide for more information on fees.

Please note: Popular tourist and business destinations outside the U.S. now use chip-based cards; Magnetic strip cards, including the TD Go Card, may not work outside the U.S.

No. You cannot make purchases for amounts larger than the amount of money on your card. Occasionally a merchant will allow a purchase before checking the amount of money on your card. When they do this it might result in your card having a negative balance. This is not very common, but if it does happen, TD Bank will automatically reduce the difference from the next deposit made to your TD Go Card. There are no fees for this service. Keeping track of your balance will help you avoid this. You can also pay with multiple forms of payment. Say you only have $50 on your card and the transaction is $75, you can use the card for $50 and pay $25 with cash or another form of payment.

What is an available balance?

An available balance is the amount of money that is on your card that you can spend. The card amount increases when someone puts money on the card and decreases when you buy something or use an ATM. Your available balance does not include any TD Go Card transactions that have not yet been processed by the merchant for payment (pending transactions).

What is a pending transaction?

Pending transactions are purchases you have made that have not been processed yet. Sometimes there is a delay of up to 7 days.

What is a posted transaction?

A posted transaction means that money is in the process of being sent to the merchant and is no longer available for you to spend - it has been removed from your balance

What is a hold?

A hold is money within your TD Go Card Account that is set aside from your available balance. Money may be placed in a hold status to cover something you paid for with your TD Go Card while the merchant finishes processing the purchase. Merchants put a hold on your money so they can guarantee payment for your purchase. You will be unable to access any money that is being held. For example, when you swipe your TD Go Card at a gas station pump, the system doesn't know how much gas you'll purchase. You only pump $20 worth of gas but the system authorizes you for $50. Within a few business days, the merchant will submit the true transaction amount of $20 and the additional $30 being held will be released.

What is a Card Verification Value (CVV)?

A Card Verification Value also known as CVV is the 3-digit number located on the signature panel on the back of your TD Go Card. CVV numbers are NOT your card's PIN number. CVV numbers are also known as CSC numbers (Card Security Code). This number is often asked for when using your card online or over the phone, and it helps keep your card safe from fraud.

Can I use my TD Go Card at a gas station?

If you would like to use your TD Go Card at a gas station, we recommend paying inside and specifying the exact amount. Some gas station terminals are set up to automatically preauthorize transactions at the pump for a predetermined amount prior to the purchase that may exceed the balance on your card and cause your card to be declined. The best way to avoid this is to give the clerk the exact amount you wish to buy before you start pumping.

Will some merchants place a hold on the money in my TD Go Card Account that is more than the actual purchase amount?

Yes. Some merchants may place a hold on the money in your TD Go Card Account that is more than the actual purchase amount. As stated above, money may be placed in a hold status to cover something you paid for with your TD Go Card while the merchant finishes processing the purchase. Merchants put a hold on your money so they can guarantee payment for your purchase. You will be unable to access any money that is being held.

Here are some examples of when this could occur;
  • Restaurants - It is customary for restaurants to automatically add 20% to the amount of the bill when authorizing your purchase. For example, you and your friends go out to dinner, your bill not including tip is $15, the merchant may hold an additional 20% to cover any tip you may leave on your TD Go Card. So instead of the merchant holding $15, so they will hold $18. Remember to make sure that the balance on your card is enough to cover the total bill (including the tip) or the purchase may be declined.
  • Gas stations (pay at the pump) - Gas stations sometimes program the electronic terminal at the pump to seek approval for a set amount that could be in excess of the actual purchase amount. To avoid this, simply pre-pay for the gas (for an exact amount) with an attendant inside the station.

Does my TD Go Card expire?

The money on your TD Go Card will not expire. However, there is a "Good Thru" date printed on the front of your card. This date is needed by merchants in order to process a transaction. TD Bank will mail you a new card to the address we have on file before your card passes the "Good Thru" date. After 12 consecutive months of inactivity an inactivity fee of $2.50 per month will be assessed against you cards balance each month there is no activity.
