Single-Use Security Codes

A single-use security code is a unique number that we generate and send to your phone by SMS text or voice message whenever we need to verify your identity. For example, you may be prompted to get a security code when you log in from an unfamiliar device or location. Single-use security codes are replacing the use of security questions to provide enhanced security for your online accounts. Unlike security questions, your single-use security code changes every time we want to verify your identity to make sure it's you accessing your account.

How does it work?

Each time we prompt you, you'll be able to tell us which phone to send your code to, and if you want it sent by SMS text or voice message. Once you receive your security code, you simply enter it onto the screen and continue banking. The security code can only be used once. This two-step verification process provides an added layer of security to help keep your account safe from hackers or unauthorized users who may have your username and/or password.

Please note that standard wireless carrier message and data rates may apply for SMS text messages.

Phone setup for single-use security codes

You can use either a cell phone or land line to receive single-use security codes. Your code can be sent by either SMS text to your cell phone or by voice message to your cell phone or land line.

You can view, update and add phones to receive one-time security codes in the mobile app under "Settings," or in your browser by clicking your name in the upper right corner and choosing "Update Personal Settings" in the Settings column.

You can add up to 4 phones to receive security codes, so you can access your accounts no matter where you are. We recommend you add more than one phone for several reasons:

  • If you travel with a different SIM card or phone number
  • When your default phone is not nearby
  • To make sure you can access your accounts, no matter where you are
  • If your default phone is lost or not working
