Welcome to TD Helps and thank you for sending us your question, Susan
You would be able to deposit a check in your son's name into a joint account you hold with him. Please note that you would not be able to cash the check first. Cashing a check in your son's name would require him to be present with you in the store.
Depositing the check would have a different availability than if it was cashed first. If your son was present and able to cash out the TD Bank check in his name, the funds would be available in full immediately. Depositing your sons check for him would be subject to the normal funds availability policy. Because there are exceptions that may cause delays in funds availability, we invite you to look at our Personal Deposit Account Agreement here: http://bit.ly/1kb17UQ . On pages 35-37 you can find our Funds Availability Policy along with information about when you'll have access to deposits.
Let us know if you have any further questions. We are always here to help. Have a pleasant day
