You've brought a great question to TD Helps, Matt. Thanks for stopping by and we'll be more than happy to discuss this with you.
First, we'd like to let you know that although TD Bank and TD Canada Trust fall under the same TD shield, we are different entities. If the joint account is opened here in the US, it would not be able to be accessed at a TD Canada Trust branch and vice versa. We encourage you to consider this when deciding which country you'd like to open the account in. Of course, the option to open one in each location is also available if this would suit your needs.
Within TD Bank US, in order to open a joint account, both owners must be present at one of our Stores together to complete any necessary documentation, including your signature cards.
That being said, you may begin an account here in the US and have your mom added as an owner at a later time. We'd also recommend that you contact the TD Bank Store nearest you to determine if they can provide any other option to add your mom, given her location. Please see http://bit.ly/TDStores to search for the convenient TD Bank Store locations near you, including lobby hours and their contact info.
We invite you to review TD Bank US Checking Account options here: http://bit.ly/1oXjGgF, or use our Checking Account Selector at http://bit.ly/1vW1xnU. And our Savings products are listed here: http://bit.ly/1hzzhPT, or use our Savings Selector Tool at http://bit.ly/1sxY9Rd.
If you do choose to begin the account individually at first, you may use the Open Account button at these links to begin your account application. Or, to open your account by phone, feel free to give us a call 24/7 at 888-751-9000 to speak with one of our dedicated Customer Service Representatives.
If your mom prefers to begin the account, she can either open an account with TD Canada Trust or with TD Bank US.
To open a TD Bank US account from her current location, she's welcome to call our Cross Border Banking team at 877-700-2913, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for assistance. Or, she can click here: http://bit.ly/1ishIab to begin an application for an account with TD Bank in the US. Either way, once it has been established, you'll both want to visit a US TD Bank Store to be added as a joint account owner.
If she prefers to open the account with TD Canada Trust, you can both take a look here: http://bit.ly/1w95LIc for information on adding a joint owner to an account there. To contact TD Canada Trust with any questions you or your mom may have, feel free to post your own question here: http://bit.ly/1kD3iFr, or see all the ways they can be reached here: http://bit.ly/1w1gWm8.
Hope this answers your question, Matt! Let us know what else we can do to help and have a fantastic night.
