so i had purchased an item online from amazon but i ended up cancelling the order and got an email saying that funds were not charged but i still had those funds missing. after contacting customer support they said the funds will be in an authorisation state held by my bank and to wait how long does it usually take for funds to appear after they enter authorisation

Welcome to TD Helps, David.
This is a great question, and we'll be more than happy to help!
Based on the information you have provided, it sounds as if your transaction with Amazon is in a 'hold' status.
A debit card 'hold' is a debit card purchase that has not yet posted and is still pending in your account. In some instances, before vendors remove the funds from an account, they place a hold on the funds to notify us that a purchase has been made. If the vendor fails to present the final receipt for payment, the funds should automatically be released back to your account, typically within 5 business days.
However, in the event that you may need these funds sooner, you're welcome to connect with us directly, and we may be able to have the debit card hold removed from your account right away!
Our Banking Specialists are always happy to help, and can be reached by dialing 1-888-751-9000, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you'd prefer, you're also welcome to visit a TD Store location, during lobby hours, to speak with a Customer Service Representative. We hope this helps clear up any confusion, David. Have a great rest of your day!
