I'm a Canadian with an account with TD Canada Trust - I'd like to open a US bank account that my wife can access funds while she is studying abroad in Naples, FL and for me to be able to send money to her for monthly expenses. Is there any way to open the account and add my wife as a joint holder for the US account? Could I leave it in my name but give her an access card to draw funds at her will? We do not share the same Canadian TD bank account. Thanks in advance.

Hi Wayne. We're glad to hear that your wife will be studying here in the US!
You have a couple of options for opening a cross border account. If you will be coming down to help her get settled at school, you both can visit a local TD Bank Store with photo ID to open it as a joint account. That would give both of you full access. You can find all of our locations here: https://go.td.com/1nq31dc.
The account can also be opened by phone by calling our Cross Border Banking Department 24/7 at 877-700-2913 or online by visiting https://go.td.com/1tSdSbr. If the account is opened online or by phone though, it can only be opened as a single account. Both of you would still need to visit a TD Bank Store in the US with photo ID to have your wife added to the account so she has full access and her own debit card.
One of the great things about having a TD Canada Trust account and a US TD Bank account is that you will have the option of transferring funds back and forth between your accounts, free of charge. As long as you are a signer on both of the accounts, you can initiate transfers. Your wife would not be required to be on your TD Canada Trust account. But, please note that only you would be able to initiate the wires to or from Canada. If you check out the Cross Border info online at https://go.td.com/1tSdSbr, you'll see details making those transfers.
Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions. We hope your wife enjoys her time at school in the US. She couldn't have picked a better place than sunny Florida!
