Thanks for writing in and great question, Elodie! We'll be happy to discuss this with you.
Please note that although you'll certainly be able to deposit a foreign check into a TD Bank account, a foreign check will need to be deposited with a teller. If you're interested in banking with TD Bank, you'll still be able to do so from the Portland, Oregon area and we'll be happy to let you know how you can do so. However, keep in mind that to deposit this particular check to your account, you'll need to be present on the East Coast of the US, in one of our Stores from Maine to Florida.
If you'd still like to establish an account with TD from your current location, we recommend giving us a call 24/7 at 888-751-9000 to speak with one of our dedicated Banking Specialists. To begin the account application, you'll need your Social Security number and a valid personal identification such as a Driver's license, State ID, or Passport. Our Specialists will be more than happy to help you establish your account by phone, and they'll be able to provide convenient deposit options and any other information you may need at that time.
Prior to your call, please feel free to review the convenient account types we currently offer on our website to find accounts which best suit you. To view and compare our checking accounts, visit http://bit.ly/1aDaRqd or check out our Checking Selector Tool http://bit.ly/1vW1xnU for help selecting a checking account that is the best fit you. To view and compare savings account products, click on http://bit.ly/1pJT9I9, or if you prefer, we also have a Savings Selector Tool http://bit.ly/1vW1DvM which can help you choose the best savings account for your needs.
Please note that if you are able to verify an address within our footprint, you are also welcome to use our website for the account opening process. You can open the account after choosing your account above by clicking on the "Open Account" box, which will be listed at the bottom of each account's details. You'll need the same forms of identification listed above, and if you open your account online, you can make your first deposit using a debit or credit card (Visa or MasterCard), or via direct deposit using the routing and account numbers from another bank account you may have.
If you will be within our footprint, once you've established your account, if you'd like to deposit the foreign check we invite you to review some helpful information we have listed below before making this deposit:
-The international check must have an equivalent value of at least US $100.00.
-Rates used for currency conversion are provided by TD Bank traders. We do not use rates printed by third parties in newspapers or published online.
-For your protection, the item should be hand delivered to a Store and not mailed. Please do not deposit foreign checks by using the ATM or via Mobile Deposit.
-The conversion rate applied will be on the day the check is received in the Foreign Check Collection department. Additionally, fees may apply for the deposit of a foreign item. If you'll be depositing the check to a personal account with TD Bank, please take a look at our current Fee Schedule here: http://bit.ly/1cTejgt.
Please note that there are exceptions that may cause delays in funds availability. We invite you to look at our Deposit Account Agreement here for personal accounts: http://bit.ly/1kb17UQ. On pages 38-41 you can find our Funds Availability Policy along with information about when you'll have access to deposits. For foreign check deposit funds availability, please refer directly to page 41 for additional information, and please note that funds availability may be delayed for new account holders as well.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us 24/7 at the number listed above or stop by any TD Store locations in your area. To find TD Stores near you, please visit: http://bit.ly/TDStores.
Thanks again for the question, Elodie! We hope this information will help, and best of luck to you!
