Hello Dwight, this is an excellent question for us here at TD Helps. We understand your concerns and the importance of security for your debit card purchases.
While TD Bank does not offer EMV (Europay MasterCard and VISA) chip cards at this time, we will continue to assess our customers' needs. We are committed to providing financial solutions that meet those needs as they arise.
We appreciate your attention to your account security. TD Bank offers customers multiple layers of security protection against fraud, and has tools in place to monitor debit cards for suspicious activity. We monitor cards for unusual activity 24 hours a day/7 days a week and will reach out to you if we suspect fraud. For additional safety, we encourage you to visit http://bit.ly/1npPddy for tips to protect your accounts.
As you are inquiring about EMV technology because you mentioned traveling to Europe, please note that approximately 97% of international merchants at this time will accept magstripe-only cards. However, it’s good to have an alternate form of payment (i.e. cash) if your magstripe-only card is not accepted.
If you will be traveling, for the most effective use of your card we recommend contacting TD Bank prior to your trip to provide your travel dates and destinations. If you plan to travel while in another country using subways, buses, through toll booths, etc. try to purchase your tickets in advance. We also suggest bringing local currency just in case it is needed. And if your card is not accepted and you do not have local currency, we advise that you find an attendant who can help direct you toward an acceptable payment method. Please also see http://bit.ly/1ltwDDc for some of our international travel tips.
We hope this information has been helpful Dwight and also wish you a wonderful week.
