I want to set up an Electronic Transfer from my TD Checking into my TD Ameritrade brokerage account. Do i need to clear this with my TD Bank?/How do I avoid potentially getting a ACH Return Fee from TD Ameritrade?

Welcome to TD Helps, Paul. We'd be happy to help you make a transfer!
TD Ameritrade and TD Bank are separate entities that share the same TD Shield and unfortunately there are no instant transfers between the two. There are ways available for you to transfer funds from your TD Checking Account to your TD Ameritrade Account and we would be happy to provide them to you.
You may login to your account on the TD Ameritrade website and request to retrieve funds from TD Bank via ACH.
You can also utilize our Bill Pay feature and set up TD Ameritrade as a payee as well. If you have any questions regarding these methods, please contact TD Ameritrade 24/7 at 800-400-3603.
Additionally, one of our newest features on www.tdbank.com is the External Transfer feature. External Transfers are used if you're sending money from your personal account with TD Bank to your account at another Financial Institution. This option is available via Online Banking. To use this feature you must be enrolled in Online Banking. If you are signed up for our Online Banking, please check here http://bit.ly/1eaISlq to log in. If you are not currently enrolled for online banking and wish to enroll for online banking for your personal accounts, you may use our self-service option by visiting http://bit.ly/1lU2qfY to begin the enrollment process. In order to do so, you will need your account number, TD Bank ATM/Debit Card, your Social Security Number and your email address. Once at the page, please select "Personal" from the drop down box. When you select continue, you will have to read and accept the Online Banking Service Agreement. Then you will be asked to enter your personal information including the items mentioned earlier and to create a user name and password. Finally you will be asked to create three security questions. When you finish the enrollment process, you will have immediate access to your account(s).

Once you've successfully enrolled and after you log in, please choose the "Transfers" tab and click on the "Transfer to Accounts Outside TD Bank". You would have to add your account at a different institution. To do so, select "Add a New Account." You will then be prompted to select the type of account followed by the account and routing numbers. Once you enter the required fields, the transfer service will then display whether or not you can make an immediate transfer. To qualify for the next day delivery option, you must wait 90 days from your first successful 3-day transfer and must not have had any transactions that overdrew your account in the past 90 days.
