spring. Is it possible to close it and re-open it? Also, I'm currently out of the state, in a remote area, so I would have to do it by phone or letter via mail. I also read that one needs to have a zero balance in order to close an account. But I'm afraid it I take the minimum out balance, and bring it to zero, I'll be charged a fee before/while I go through the process of closing the account (if I have to do it by letter via postal mail). Thanks for your answers.

Thank you for reaching out to us on TD Helps, Anne! We would hate to see you go. We understand your concern and we'll be glad to answer any questions you may have about your savings account.
Although an account cannot be closed temporarily, we can give you some options on how to close out your account and how to open a new account when you are ready to do so.
You are correct, in order to close your account, the balance must be zero. If you have remaining funds in the account, there are several ways to bring the account to a zero balance. You can transfer your funds to another account, you can withdraw the remaining funds with your TD ATM card or request to close the account via mail.
To transfer the funds into another account, whether it is with TD Bank or another Financial Institution, you can do so via your TD Online Banking. To do so, you must first be enrolled for Online Banking, if you're not currently enrolled for Online Banking, you may do so by clicking here: http://bit.ly/1lU2qfY. Please have your account number, ATM/debit card number and Social Security number available. If you have any trouble signing up, please contact our Tech Support Specialists, 24/7 at 800-493-7562.
Once you have successfully enrolled and after you log in, to transfer the remaining funds into another account with another Financial Institution, please select the "Transfer" tab and click on the "Transfer to Accounts Outside TD Bank". You will need to input the account information you have located with another institution by clicking on the "Add a New Account" link. To transfer into a different account you have with TD Bank, you may select the "Transfer" tab and select the necessary fields.
For the information on External Transfer Terms and Conditions, please check out this link: http://bit.ly/1pADlWD (specifically Pg. 3, Section 1.16 for information on the payment methods and amounts).
Once your balance reflects a zero balance, you can contact us directly at 888-751-9000 and one of our Banking Specialists can close the account for you after the account information is verified. You can also send a secured message through online banking requesting the account closure as well. After you are logged into your account, click on the Customer Service tab and select "Send a Message." Please note that any transactions that come in or out of the account can prevent the closure of the account if it posts within 72 hours of the closure request.
Please note, once your account is at a zero balance, we recommend notifying TD Bank with your request to close the account immediately to avoid a monthly maintenance fees. The maintenance fee would be assessed on the last day of your statement cycle.
Another option to close your account, if you have remaining funds, is to send us a notarized letter with your request. If the letter, please provide the following information:
▪Your name ▪Your account number(s) ▪Your request to close the account(s) ▪Your current address ▪Your signature
Please also include the address of where you would like us to send the remaining funds to. Please note; the funds will be sent in the form of a check.
It can then be mailed to your Home Store. Your Home Store is the TD Store you visited to open your Account.
Once you are ready to maintain a savings account, there are few ways available for you to open the account with us. We invite you to check out: http://bit.ly/1pJT9I9 for a list of our savings accounts and here: http://bit.ly/1vW1DvM for our Savings Selector Tool; which can help you choose the best savings account for your needs.
