We hope you're enjoying your time abroad, Alejandro, and we'll be happy to help!
We're happy to announce that, even if you are overseas, you may continue to use your TD Bank account. However, please note, in order for an account to be in an active status, activity on the account is needed. If no Customer-initiated activity (deposits, withdrawals, or debit card transactions) occurs on an account, it will be considered inactive after a specified period of time. Checking or Money Market accounts are automatically changed to an inactive status after 6 months of no Customer-initiated activity. Savings accounts are considered inactive after 9 months with no Customer-initiated activity. Once these accounts are in an inactive status, if no activity occurs within 3 or 5 years, the account will become dormant. The time an account takes to become dormant depends on the region or State where your account was open.
Please keep in mind that once an account becomes dormant, it can be turned over to the State after a number of years, depending on your location. We'd like to provide a little information for you regarding dormant accounts. Please see the article listed here: http://bit.ly/2sHmhtj, which reviews information about abandoned or unclaimed accounts in the U.S.
In addition, if you currently have a Debit Card that you want to use during your travels, we're also happy to announce that neither Visa or TD Bank charges any kind of foreign transaction fees. You are able to use your Debit Card anywhere VISA is accepted, worldwide! You may use your Debit Card to make cash withdrawals internationally at any ATM Machine that displays either the VISA or PLUS logo.
If you are unable to find a compatible machine, you would also be able to use your Debit Card to obtain a VISA Cash Advance. Please not that non- TD ATM fees still may apply. For more information on the Fee Schedule, please take a look here: https://go.td.com/2lbbfGg.
If you need to contact us while traveling, the easiest way to do so would be to send a Secure Message right from your Online Banking. First, log into your TD Bank online profile by clicking here: https://go.td.com/1eaISlq. Once you've successfully logged in, look for the 'Message Center' on the left hand side and select 'Send a secure message'. You may also do the same from your Mobile App. After you've logged in, select 'Send a Secure Message' from the side Menu. We can generally respond within 24 hours or less.
You may also contact us from outside the United States via phone at 1-888-751-9000, or collect with operator assistance from a land line phone by asking the operator to dial 1-215-569-0518. For your convenience, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The US country code is 1-011.
We hope this answers all your questions, Alejandro, and please let us know if we can further assist you! We're always happy to help.
