Hi Larry! Thank you for taking the time to visit us here at TD Helps! We will be happy to clarify on the lifespan of a personal check.
Checks that are more than 6 months old are considered "stale dated," but are still eligible for negotiation by the Bank. Some checks have an expiration date (payroll checks, government checks, etc.), which limits or extends the time period when the checks can be cashed or deposited.
Please take note that stale-dated checks drawn on TD Bank may still be cashed after we verify the status of the account and check for a stop payment order. If a stop payment is not found, it is possible that the check may be presented to your account for payment even if six months or more have passed.
If you do not want this check to be negotiated, we do recommend placing a stop payment to ensure that the funds are not paid. You can place a stop payment anytime by calling us at 888-751-9000. You can also place a stop payment online by first logging onto your TD Bank Online Banking account. If you're not currently enrolled for Online Banking, you may do so by clicking: http://bit.ly/1lU2qfY. You will need your account number and ATM/debit card number to enroll online. Once you're logged in, please click on the "Customer Service" tab and then "Stop Payment." If you need assistance enrolling, please contact our Digital banking Specialists, available 24/7, at 1-800-493-7562. After account verification, our Specialists would be more than happy to help!
Once you have successfully enrolled, to please a stop payment, please log onto your Online Banking, and then click the “Customer Service” tab at the top of your screen. Please click the second blue link from the top in the right hand column that says “Stop Payment.”
In order to ensure the effectiveness of a stop payment, we require that you provide us with the following information when the stop is placed:
1. Check number
2. Date on check
3. Dollar amount
Please note, stop payments are effective for 12 months from the date the stop payment is placed. Also, depending on the type of account you have, it is possible that any stop payment fee may be waived. Please review our Fee Schedule at http://bit.ly/1cTejgt to determine if your account type would waive this fee.
Should you have any questions at all, our friendly Customer Service Representatives are available 24/7 at 1-888-751-9000 to assist you, or you are always welcome at our TD Bank Stores. Please see http://bit.ly/TDStores for a listing of our locations and hours near you.
We hope this information was helpful, Larry! Have a wonderful day!
