I am a Canadian citizen working in Guatemala, for an American Company, and being paid in US dollars. I would like to open a US bank checking account and was wondering if checks written on that account can be cashed in Guatemala?

Good afternoon, Suzanne, and thanks for contacting us today!
It's great to hear that you're interested in opening an account with TD Bank, and before we begin, we'd like to go over the current accounts offered by TD Bank. As you stated that you were interested in opening a Checking account, we have provided a link here: https://go.td.com/2hbuGjJ with more information on the current Checking accounts available. If you're having trouble deciding, you're welcome to use our Selector Tool here: https://go.td.com/2sx4N2E, which will help by making a personalized recommendation for you.
As you are not a U.S. Citizen, in order to open an account, we ask that you please visit a TD Store location, during lobby hours, to speak with a Customer Service Representative. To take a look at Store locations and their hours, please visit http://go.td.com/1f9DSJR.
It's important to note that you will need to bring two forms of identification with you during your visit. One form of ID must be a non-US passport and the second form of ID you may select from the list below:
- Employment ID with Photo and Signature
- State Issued ID or Driver's License with Signature
- Foreign Driver's License with Photo
- US Employment Authorization card with Photo, Signature and Expiration Date
- College ID with Photo
- Alien Registration Card with Photo
- Permanent Resident Card with Photo
During your visit to the Store location, as you are interested in obtaining checks, you may request to have them ordered for you at this time as well.
While you will be able to present a written check for payment at a foreign institution, we recommend contacting that institution directly before doing so, as the decision to accept a foreign check for deposit, or even cash, would need to be determined by them.
In the event that you are unable to cash or deposit your checks at a foreign financial institution, we're happy to announce that here at TD Bank, we offer TD VISA Debit Cards, which are accepted worldwide!
You'll be able to use your debit card to make cash withdrawals internationally, at any ATM Machine that displays either the VISA or PLUS logo, and if you are unable to find a compatible machine, you will also be able to use your Debit Card to obtain a VISA Cash Advance. Please note that non-TD ATM fees still may apply. For more information on the Fee Schedule, please take a look here: https://go.td.com/2lbbfGg.
A Debit Card is also able to be obtained at a TD Store location, during the account opening process. Customer Service Representatives are able to create a card for you on the spot, and you would leave with the card in your hand that same day.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact a Banking Specialist directly at 1-888-751-9000. For your convenience, they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We hope to hear from you soon, Suzanne. Have a great day!
