I bought a used car with a lien from your business on the title. The person indicated it was paid off but never removed it from the title. Is there a way to find out if that is true?

Welcome to TD Helps, Andrew. We'd be glad to assist.
If the Auto Loan held with TD was paid off, the original borrower will need a Lien Release from us in order to obtain a clear title from the State. He or she may then sign the title over to you for sale of the vehicle.
If the Auto Loan was held with TD Bank, to obtain this documentation, a fax is required. Please instruct the borrower to fax the following information to our Consumer Release Department at 207-755-4245:
• Their full name, address, and Social Security number
• The account number, if it is available
• The year, make, model and VIN, and the date it was paid off, if available
• The request for Discharge Papers/Release of Lien
• Their signature
We also recommend that they include their best contact number and their return fax number so that we can assist as efficiently as possible. Please keep in mind that the turnaround time for the request is typically 3-5 business days.
Should you have any additional questions, feel free to have our original borrower contact our Financial Solutions Group Representatives directly at 800-937-5020. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience. You may also stop in to any TD Store during lobby hours for assistance. To find TD Store locations near you, please visit: http://bit.ly/TDStores.
Please note that if the Auto Loan was financed via TD Auto Finance, please ask the borrower to contact a TD Auto Finance Representative for instructions to obtain the Release of Lien. They are available Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm at 1-800-556-8172 to help.
We hope this helps, Andrew and have a good evening.
