Thanks for writing in today, Janice!
First, if you've received a check from a third party, we do recommend that you reach out to the person or company who paid you the check for more information as to the reason for the payment. We apologize that even if TD Bank is the issuing bank for this check, we won't be able to tell you the purpose of the refund, unless we were providing the refund to you as our Customer.
If you're uncertain that the check you received is valid and you'd like to verify the status of the account that it is drawn on, you can call one of our Banking Specialists 24/7 at 888-751-9000, as long as TD Bank is the issuing bank. Please note that TD Bank will not be able to verify if the funds are available in the account for anyone not listed as an account signer.
Typically, we'd recommend you to visit a TD Bank Store to deposit or cash the check. As we noticed that you're writing in from Indianapolis, we understand you may not be able to do so at this time. In this case, if possible we'd recommend that the person writing the check verify the funds for you by contacting a Banking Specialist at the above number with you on the line.
If this isn't a possibility, we encourage you to speak with your financial institution regarding a deposit of the check and their returned check policies, including any fees they may assess.
Thanks again for the question, Janice! Hope this helps and all the best to you!
