Welcome to TD Helps, Marjorie. We'd be glad to discuss.
If you are referring to a personal joint account, both signers have equal rights and access to the account. This means that neither signer can be removed. If you do not wish to continue to share the account, the account must be closed. Once the account is closed, the individual may open a new personal account to which the other will not have access to. In order to close a joint personal account, only one signer is required to submit the request.
However you are able to visit a TD Store to update/remove individuals who are listed on your account as beneficiaries/payable on death in the event of your passing.
You are able to close an account by visiting a TD Store. To take a look at Store locations and their hours please visit http://go.td.com/1f9DSJR.
Alternatively, you are able to close your account by phone or secure message if your account balance reflects $0.00. Feel free to call us 24/7 at 888-751-9000 or send a secure message while logged in to Online Banking here: http://go.td.com/1eaISlq. On the left hand side, you should see an option to "Send a secure message" located in the “Message Center."
If you decide to open a new account, we recommend taking a look at the accounts we have to offer. You are able to take a look at checking accounts here: https://go.td.com/2eQORxu and savings accounts here: https://go.td.com/2dIcnAw.
If you're having trouble choosing an account, you are able to use our Checking Selector Tool here: https://go.td.com/KmmHe7 and our Savings Selector here: https://go.td.com/1hXi2wF for a custom recommendation.
Once you're ready to open an account, you are able to do so online by selecting "Open Account," by calling us 24/7 at calling the number mentioned above or by visiting any TD Store.
Please know regardless of the method you choose, you will need a Social Security Number and a valid photo I.D. (Driver's License, Passport, Military I.D. etc.).
We hope this information helps, Marjorie. Have a good day.
