Hi, I'm moving to Washington DC in 6 weeks time on a two year secondment with a US firm. We really need local US denominated bank accounts as soon as we arrive. We won't have SSNs for at least 4 weeks. Can we open checking accounts without an SSN, and with UK ID? We will have passports, visas, UK driving licences, UK addresses utility bills etc.

Come in to see us at any of our Stores once you're here in the United States. Accounts for non-U.S. or Canadian Customers must be opened in person. A U.S. Social Security Number will not be required to open your account. We can always update that later once they've been assigned.
It sounds like you may already have everything you'll need, but we want to make sure we provide you with the requirements.
You and any joint signers will need to bring two forms of ID with you to open up an account at TD Bank. The first should be your UK passport. The second could be one of the following:
- Alien Registration Card with Photo
- Foreign Driver's License with Photo
- Permanent Resident Card with Photo
There may be additional forms of ID that could be accepted. We suggest checking with the Store you intend to use prior to arriving in the U.S., to ensure you have all of the necessary documents with you at the time of account opening. For tax purposes, you will be required to fill out a W8-BEN form.
