I was just informed that it is discretionary as to whether or not a person's checking account is actually protected by this service. A check of mine was overturned and I didn't know that this would happen. How much money does overdraft protection actually protect?

Good question, Kym and we appreciate you coming to TD Helps for assistance.
TD Bank offers different forms of overdraft protection service to our Customers; we invite you to take a look here: http://bit.ly/1AlDFOr for more information regarding the overdraft options available through TD Bank.
If you're currently using TD Debit Card Advance, we ask that you take a look here: http://bit.ly/1voNBCy for more details and also here: http://bit.ly/Yv0ulC for more specific information.
Traditional forms of overdraft protection are typically a linked Savings or line of credit which can be accessed for funds should the linked Checking account become overdrawn. Descriptions of these options can also be found at the first link mentioned above. With these forms of overdraft protection, you'll know in advance how much you'll be able to spend, depending on the amount in your savings account or line of credit. To compare all of these options, take a look here: http://bit.ly/1lx9Xko.
To review your account and determine which overdraft option you're using, we invite you to give one of our knowledgeable Banking Specialists a call. For your convenience, they are available 24/7 at 888-751-9000 and can review your account with you in further detail at that time after account verification.
You may also feel free to stop by your local TD Bank Store location, during our extended lobby hours for assistance. If you click here: http://bit.ly/TDStores, you can find the TD Bank Store and lobby hours nearest you.
Let us know if you have any further questions. We are always here to help. Have a pleasant day, Kym
