I've moved out of state and no longer have a TD Bank convenient to me. If I move the money from savings to my checking account and then write a check will that work for transferring the funds?

Thank you for joining us on TD Helps, Ken. We understand that banking needs change and we'd be happy to assist you.
First, we'd like to let you know that we are committed to your satisfaction as a Customer. If you have moved outside of our footprint, we do have some options for you to complete your banking without the need to visit a TD Bank Store. Please note that we offer fully featured online and mobile banking services and live telephone support available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.
If you are not currently enrolled for Online Banking, you can sign up by clicking here: http://bit.ly/1lU2qfY. Keep in mind that you will need your account number, Social Security Number, ATM/Visa Debit Card number and email address to enroll. If you have any trouble, feel free to contact us 24/7 by dialing 888-751-9000 and our Representatives will be happy to assist you.
Once you're enrolled, you're welcome to use this service to help you keep track of your account, and you can even communicate with us whenever you'd like using our Secure Messaging service available once you log in. To do so, please log in at our full website here: http://bit.ly/1eaISlq, click on the Customer Service tab, and the use the Send a Message link to talk with us about your account questions or requests.
Signing up for Online Banking allows you access to our Mobile Banking services too. If you have a smart phone, you are able to bank on the go with our Mobile Banking Application found here: http://bit.ly/1hOPk1H. You even get to use the same user name and password for the application that you use for Online Banking. Again, if you have any trouble, feel free to contact the number listed above.
If you would still like to close your account, there are a few ways you may do so.
As you've mentioned in your question, you are welcome to transfer funds from your Savings account and then issue a check to yourself. Once cashed and both accounts show a $0.00 balance, please contact us via the number mentioned above or via Secure Message.
You are also able to transfer funds out of your TD account and into another institution via our External Transfer Service. The option is available via our "Transfers" tab via Online Banking. If you are already enrolled for Online Banking, you are able to log in by using the link mentioned above. After logging onto your account, please choose the "Transfers" tab. Then click on "Transfer to Accounts Outside TD Bank." You will then be asked to accept a user agreement and review the fee schedule.
After the enrollment is completed, you may continue to schedule a transfer by adding your account at a different institution. To do so, select "Add a New Account." You will then be prompted to select the type of account followed by the account and routing numbers. Once you enter the required fields, the transfer service will then display whether or not you can make an immediate transfer. In some cases, a trial deposit is initiated at the receiving institution for verification purposes. You’re welcome to check out http://bit.ly/1jXKYqq for additional details.
When sending an External Transfer, you will have two delivery options, three-day or next-day delivery. Please note that the next-day delivery option becomes available 90 days after your first successful three-day transfer if no overdrafts have occurred in that time. Additionally, fees may apply for External Transfer service. For the Transfers Terms and Conditions please see: http://bit.ly/1lkiC6K, and for more information on the fee schedule, please take a look here: http://bit.ly/1cTejgt.
Please note that once the funds have been removed, it would be necessary to contact us to request to close the account. Once the balance is zero, you can give us a call 24/7 by dialing the number mentioned above to place your request. Or, you can send a Secure Message by logging in to your Online Banking account and clicking the Customer Service tab. You`ll find the "Send a Message" link there and just fill in the form with your account number and request to close the account.
Another easy way to close an account that has a balance is via mailed written request. You may request to close your account and have any available money in your account be sent to you by check. You can mail a request with the following instructions:
▪Your name ▪Your account number(s) ▪Your request to close the account(s) ▪Your current address ▪Your signature
For your security, please have the letter notarized. It can then be mailed to:
TD Bank, N.A Your Home Store's Address or, P.O. Box 1377 Lewiston, Maine 04243-1377
If you've already opened an account at your local institution, you're also welcome to check with your other banking institution for any options they may be able to provide you for a transfer.
For any questions you may have, feel free to connect with us 24/7 at the number above.
We hope this information is helpful and have a good evening.
