I've searched the site and the forum, but all I can find is a phone number to call. I suggest TB add a page explaining the procedure for an American living abroad opening an account. I would prefer to open an account with TD. Thanks

Thanks for visiting us at TD Helps, Maurice. We appreciate you looking to open an account with TD Bank.
Before we begin, we invite you to take a look at the accounts we currently offer by clicking here: http://bit.ly/Wczmq0 for a list of Checking accounts and here: http://bit.ly/1pJT9I9 for a list of our Savings accounts. For a personalized recommendation for a Checking account click here: http://bit.ly/1vW1xn, or if you prefer, we also have a Savings selector here: http://bit.ly/1vW1DvM which can help you choose the best Savings account for your needs.
Additionally, there is no minimum amount required to open an account with us. However, depending on the type of account you choose to open, you may be asked to maintain a minimum daily balance to avoid a monthly maintenance fee. If you choose an account with a minimum daily balance, we recommend opening the account with that amount as an initial deposit.
Once you have selected the account(s) you'd like to open, if you are a non-U.S. Resident (or U.S. Citizen living outside the Country for several years), you'll have to visit one of our many convenient Stores the next time you visit the States. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but please click here: http://bit.ly/TDStores to find a TD Bank that you may visit.
Once you are able to visit a Store, as it sounds like you are a U.S. Citizen, you'll need to bring a valid U.S. photo identification with you such as a U.S. Passport or Driver's License. We also recommend connecting with the TD Store you'll be visiting for details on any additional information and/or documents that may be needed to open an account.
If you've only been abroad for a short period of time and still have a valid U.S. address that you can use and have access to, you may be able to open an account with us online or over the phone. Feel free to use the links above to open an account online, or if you have any difficulty you can reach us from outside of the United States at 1-856-751-9000 or 1-215-569-0518 via landline with an Operator's assistance. We are here 24/7 and would be happy to help answer any questions or open an account for you.
We hope this helps and hope you have a great day.
